Far more people than anyone thought are seeking help from chiropractors, according to a new nationwide Gallup report.
In the last year alone, according to the just-released "2015 Gallup-Palmer Inaugural Report: Americans' Perceptions of Chiropractic," 33.6 million Americans aged 18 and older turned to chiropractic care to relieve conditions like back and neck pain.
Do you think that this big increase of chiropractic utilization is due to the awareness of the overuse of addictive drugs and surgery?

Milano Bakery celebrates 100 year anniversary

As some of you know, Milano Bakery was started by my maternal grandfather Mario DeBenedetti and then run by my uncle and father. I worked there as a child and teenager and drove a bread route for six years before I went back to school to get my chiropractic degree. It is now run by my two cousins Mario and Darin. I would like to congratulate them on recently achieving a 100 year anniversary!
Anyone have any memories or stories concerning the bakery?

Rep. Ron Kind co-sponsoring bill to provide pain management alternatives including chiropractic car at all VA facilities

As you may have heard, the Tomah VA clinic in Wisconsin has come under intense criticism for an extreme overuse of narcotic drug prescribing to veterans. In response congressman Ron Kind has co-sponsored a bill called the Chiropractic Care Available to All Veteran's Act. It would require chiropractic care and services at all VA medical centers by the end of 2016.
He has said that "We need to be exploring more complimentary, alternative forms of medicine in dealing with pain management for our veterans, instead of just loading them up with a cocktail of pain management drugs, which is really just treating the symptom and not the cause of the pain."

Putting Neck Pain Treatments Into Perspective

Every type of treatment has a risk profile. There has been much fear mongering from some in the medical profession about cervical manipulation. This chart shows the very low risk profile of manipulation compared to common medical procedures. Talk about throwing stones from a glass house!

New rules on narcotic painkillers and the Veteran's Administration

Concerning the highly addictive painkillers, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has termed this “the worst drug addiction epidemic in the country’s history, killing more people than heroin and crack cocaine.” Pain experts at the Veteran's Administration now say that in hindsight they have been overmedicating veterans.
Here is a statement from the American Chiropractic Association addressing this crisis.
Do you think adding better access to chiropractic care for veterans and the military will help with this problem?

Legislation Introduced in U.S. Congress to Further Integrate DCs in Military, VA Health Care Systems

Two new bipartisan bills ( how often have we recently heard the word bipartisan?) have been introduced concerning increased integration of chiropractic services into the military system. A House bill would expand access to chiropractic care through inclusion of benefits in the Tricare insurance program to retired military and their families. The Senate bill would expand chiropractic services to all VA treatment facilities.
Do you think these are worthwhile objectives?

Deaths by medical mistakes hit records

Another study showing huge death and serious complication rate from hospital care. A recent study from Journal of Patient Safety estimates 1000 deaths and 10,000 serious complications per day from preventable hospital errors...and this does not even count medical errors made outside of hospitals.
"What these numbers say is that every day, a 747, two of them are crashing. Every two months, 9-11 is occurring…we would not tolerate that degree of preventable harm in any other forum."
Any thoughts on why we don't hear more about all these preventable deaths and injuries?

Surgery Not Better for Spine Narrowing, Study Finds

Have seen this result often from surgery studies over the last recent years. This new study is from the prestigious Spine Journal. Long term studies often show no benefit for surgery over non surgery treatment. That is one of the reasons I treat so many patients who have had spinal surgery. I often hear that the pain was lessened after the surgery but then returned.
Has anyone been through this scenario?
