Ignoring the Science on Mammograms
Here is a great article by an emergency medicine doc that discusses the most recent study showing that over the last 30 years mammograms have not reduced the number of advanced cancers. He then goes on to discuss why so much of the medical profession is ignoring the scientific evidence on mammograms and other cancer screening. Does this surprise any of you?http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/28/ignoring-the-science-on-mammograms/?src=rechp

Get Up. Get Out. Don’t Sit.
I spend much time and effort motivating my patients to become or stay more active.
Two new studies with one from the British Journal of Sports Medicine had several surprising findings including that every hour of television watched after the age of 25 reduces the viewer’s life expectancy by 21.8 minutes. Also “highest sedentary behavior,” meaning those who sat the most, had a 112 percent increase in their relative risk of developing diabetes; a 147 percent increase in their risk for cardiovascular disease; and a 49 percent greater risk of dying prematurely — even if they regularly exercised.
So the take home message is get regular activity and cut down on the amount of sitting.

I would think that everyone is aware of the 14 unfortunate deaths from the fungal infected epidural cortisone injections causing meningitis. I am aware that epidurals are often ineffective or only give temporary relief while having possible
very significant side effects, so I only send patients for them very infrequently when the patient is severely disabled by a pinched nerve and not getting relief with anything else.
I guess we learn something everyday because I was not aware that cortisone is not approved by the FDA for injection into the epidural space of the spinal canal.

Congressional Committee Calls Chiropractic "Key Benefit" Within Department of Defense Health Care System
"Congressional Committee Calls Chiropractic "Key Benefit" Within Department of Defense Health Care System, Urges Pay Equity System". The Congress has been urging the DOD for ten years to integrate chiropractic care into the military and the DOD has unfortunately very slow in doing this adding this benefit for our military. This is another effort by Congress to speed up this process.

U.S. to Force Drug Firms to Report Money Paid to Doctors
This is another benefit from the new healthcare law. I think it will be very beneficial as many researchers have found evidence that such payments can influence doctors’ treatment decisions and contribute to higher costs by encouraging the use of more expensive drugs and medical devices which also cause more harm to patients.
