A recent study in Journal of the American Medical Association Network Open concluded that adding increased chiropractic and physical therapy coverage and other non drug services to insurance plans gave better outcomes, decreased costs, and reduced opioid use.

VA Pain Conference: Manipulation Among 9 Nondrug Therapies Recommended
Spinal manipulation is one of nine nondrug therapies VA pain experts recommend for implementation across the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) for treatment of chronic pain. Authors say integration of the nondrug approaches in primary care, pain care and mental health settings should be a priority and could potentially make VHA a model for improving treatment of chronic pain nationwide.

In wake of opioid crisis, Joint Commission issues new pain standards for hospitals
The Joint Commission accredits the vast majority of US hospitals. Beginning January1st they will require hospitals to provide nonpharmacological pain treatment methods, alternatives that can include physical methods such as chiropractic treatment and acupuncture, as well as relaxation and cognitive behavioral therapy.
