Christine Goertz, D.C., Ph.D., appointed to Board of Governors for the new Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute

One of the provisions in the nation’s new health law, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, authorizes the creation of an autonomous Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) as a nonprofit corporation that is not “an agency or establishment of the U.S. Government.”

This agency should be very instrumental in helping our healthcare system to become more evidence based as much of our current system does not currently practice in an evidence based manner. This is especially true in the area of back disorders. Several studies have shown that the majority of medical physicians are not following current evidence based guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of back disorders. This is probably contributing to the high cost of treatment of these type of disorders.

One of the goals of the new act is to encourage increased comparative research in which different treatments are evaluated against each other determine which are the best.

Governor Quinn signed a bill passed by the Illinois Legislature last year requiring a chiropractic physician on the Illinois State Board of Health. That seat has recently been appointed to Dr. Monica Schnack of Bloomington, IL.
Also governor Quinn appointed Dr. Richard Fay of Naperville to replace Dr. Linda Zange on the Illinois Medical Disciplinary Board. Below is a press release from the Illinois Chiropractic Society.

Governor Appoints Chiropractic Physicians and ICS Members to State Boards

Last week Governor Quinn appointed two Illinois Chiropractic Society members to two different Illinois State Boards; one to the State Board of Health and one to the Medical Disciplinary Board. Following efforts by both the Illinois Chiropractic Society and the doctors themselves, the appointments were finalized.

Dr. Monica Schnack (Bloomington, ICS President) was appointed by the Governor to the newly created Chiropractic Physician position on the State Board of Health. This position was created last year after the Illinois Legislature passed and Governor Quinn signed ICS initiated legislation into law adding the position to the State Board of Health.

Dr. Richard Fay (Naperville, 2009 ICS Chiropractic Physician of the Year) has been appointed by Governor Quinn to serve on the Illinois Medical Disciplinary Board. The Medical Disciplinary Board is tasked with reviewing and making recommendations regarding disciplinary cases for all categories of physicians in Illinois. Dr. Fay is taking over the seat previously held by Dr. Linda Zange (Glenview), who has served on the Medical Disciplinary Board for the last 8 years."
