Most recent study showing chiropractic care less expensive than medical care for low back disorders

Here is the most recent of a long list of studies showing chiropractic care to be less expensive than medical care for low back disorders. This was a large study of Blue Cross of Tennessee cases over two years and showed 20-40% less cost for chiropractic care! Chiropractic care appears more expensive because it has a higher average of office visits, but medical care has much higher indirect costs such as testing including MRI's and CT's, drug costs, referrals to multiple specialists, referrals to physical therapy, higher hospitalization, and higher surgery rates.

Christine Goertz, D.C., Ph.D., appointed to Board of Governors for the new Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute

One of the provisions in the nation’s new health law, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, authorizes the creation of an autonomous Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) as a nonprofit corporation that is not “an agency or establishment of the U.S. Government.”

This agency should be very instrumental in helping our healthcare system to become more evidence based as much of our current system does not currently practice in an evidence based manner. This is especially true in the area of back disorders. Several studies have shown that the majority of medical physicians are not following current evidence based guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of back disorders. This is probably contributing to the high cost of treatment of these type of disorders.

One of the goals of the new act is to encourage increased comparative research in which different treatments are evaluated against each other determine which are the best.
